Ways To Recover - Gibney Theater - May/June 2024 - Gibney Theater as part of Moving Visions Dance Event. Special thanks to Loretta Thomas for having us! My project is a new work for eight dancers titled Ways to Recover. Ways to Recover is inspired by my young husband’s diagnosis with cancer – specifically, a brain tumor. The dance is a representation of the human condition when faced with a life-altering experience such as cancer. It will highlight the experience’s non-linear emotional journey, exploring acceptance, anger, bravery, fear, and grief. Ways to Recover additionally serves as a vessel to find healing and peace within devastation, emphasizing the importance of remaining grounded in reality. My husband’s story will inspire abstract movements. Through research and rehearsal with the dancers, I intend to create a piece that is striking both visually and emotionally. In creating and presenting Ways to Recover, the goal of this project is to inspire conversation and connection with audience members who have similar experiences. How do we find happiness? How do we even know if we are happy or not? That is the question I asked myself after going through some crisis... I thought that I was happy but after many hours of meditation, self introspection followed by some personal research I found out about the concept of the feminine and masculine divine - balance and alignment of these two fundamental energies are needed in order to be fully happy. Once I achieved this alignment I started feeling a sense of peace like never before and I realized that, in order to have peace in the world we need to find peace inside of us. And so the journey of All Truths Pure began... Enjoy... Blur In Perception is a piece that Artistic Director - Anne Parichon-Buoncore - decided to come forth with after a year of crisis. It is a piece that talks about the impact of the media on society. Anne has spent almost ten years without engaging in any type of media or news channels... the strike of the pandemic and the political meltdown (specifically in the U.S) has almost traumatized her. Her reality, free of any preconceived ideas, has been highly challenged and that is why she decided to take a chance and try to tell her story. "At some point I did not know where I was, what was real and not real" Blur In Perception takes a deep dive into the human subconscious and how it deals with reality and cyber reality. This piece is based on the novel of Orwell 1984. I wanted to illustrate what it is to be in love in a dystopian society in which love is forbidden. The first part describes the isolation,the despair and the insanity that starts appearing in the character but also hope. The second part - that is to be published soon - shows the lovers and their recklessness, their passion, their freedom. Can love be liberating? This is an auto portrait. The piece purposely starts as being off the music in the beginning to portray how the two protagonists' lack of balance, the choreography then changes to be more in tune with the music as the characters find happiness.
